Swimming in the dark est une longue lettre d'amour que Ludwik écrit à Janusz, un homme rencontré dans un camp de travail dans une Pologne post seconde guerre mondiale. Leur amour grandit mais il se trouve restreint par un gouvernement où leur homosexualité constitue un risque pour leur vie. Au fil des pages, les deux hommes essaient tant bien que mal de maintenir leur relation malgré les risques et leurs divergences politiques.
